OKAPI:Orbits GmbH is a startup in the field of space-tech and a spin-off of the Institute of Space Systems at the Technical University of Braunschweig. The goal is to make satellite missions more sustainable and cost-effective through Space Situational Awareness (SSA) as a service solution. The idea focuses on the needs of the emerging commercial space market, especially the so-called NewSpace market. With the software, customers are able to monitor their satellites (constellations) in orbit and protect them from potential collisions with other objects (e.g. space debris).
The scalable business model is based on a software platform with functional modules, which are provided via a web interface and REST APIs and can be integrated into existing customer systems. In contrast to competing software, the software uses stream processing for more efficient and flexible processing of large, constantly incoming data volumes (e.g. from different observing sensors). The software can be used to support mission planning and ensures compliance with all relevant industry standards.
OKAPI:Orbits was founded in November 2018 after several years of development and since then offers its services to international customers. Various reference customers and co-creation partners from targeted market segments have already been acquired. Today, more than 100 satellites are part of the platform.
In addition, OKAPI:Orbits also focuses on project productions for the European Space Agency, which will serve the progress in product development and to establish a standing as a reliable partner on the international, governmental and administrative level.
In the beginning of 2022 EUR 5.5 million were raised during the seed investment round to enable international market penetration and the completion of the next software functions.
